eMedia Email Marketer's sending speed was tested and measured up until the outbound email reached the internal mail server. Looking at the image below, we tested the speed from points 1 to 4:

1.  Database  In our testing we used a slightly optimized version of MySQL 5.0.15. The database is used to store and retrieve the content of the email, as well as the list of email addresses that the message is sent to.
2.  eMedia Email Marketer  Obviously we used eMedia Email Marketer for all testing. eMedia Email Marketer has two sending options: the "popup method" which sends incrementally via a web browser or the "scheduled method" which uses cron and doesn't require your browser to be opened. For our testing we used scheduled sending.
3.  PHP's mail command  eMedia Email Marketer's first and foremost job is to create an email message (including HTML, attachments, etc) and send it off to your server's mail transfer agent (MTA). PHP's mail command does just that.
4.  Internal mail server  The internal mail server's job is to make sure each email is sent from your mail server to the recipients mail server.
5.  Recipient mail server  Receives the email originally created by eMedia Email Marketer and sent using your internal mail server.

The reason we don't also test point 5 is because the speed at which the email goes from the internal mail server to the recipients mail server is beyond the control of eMedia Email Marketer and can vary greatly depending on hardware specifications, bandwidth, etc.
